The civil war, social memory and the nation: some theoretical and ethical considerations

Abstract

This work traces some fundamental ideas that can guide the way to approach the collective or social memory of El Salvador’s civil war and its connection with national experience and identity. It considers the themes of group memories, memories as discourse, national memory, history versus memory, and the role of silence and oblivion.
