Abstract

In the Salvadoran context, the footwear industry plays a vital role. However, this sector has had few improvement proposals with Lean Manufacturing programs due to its process nature.  This article presents how pilot improvement proposals can be created through the application of Lean Manufacturing.  A case study of an adhesives production plant facing efficiency and quality challenges was conducted in order to present the development of the improvement proposal.  For data collection, technical visits, observations, interviews with different levels of personnel were carried out in order to capture them in the Value Stream Map (VSM).  From this data, we identified the waste of reprocessing materials for the final product, transportation between processes, delay of arrival of information between processes, and a high level of inventories to hide the problems.  As a result of the pilot proposals, the proposal for the application of 5s is detailed, as a way to reorganize the visible information between processes, and the production pulled from a Kanban system. These proposals are presented in the Future Maps with the proposal made. From the details of these pilot proposals, it is expected that they can increase productivity and can serve as a guide for other companies on how to create improvements.
