San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA)

Institutional Public Endorsement Statement for DORA

ECA: Estudios Centroamericanos, published by Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas, promotes rigorous, ethical, and socially relevant academic research aimed at strengthening critical thinking, generating knowledge, and its contribution to human, social, environmental, and technological development.

In this regard, the University fosters quality, relevance, social impact, and diversity of academic products, rather than traditional quantitative metrics, and values scientific production accessible in Spanish and English, particularly that which responds to the needs of our regional context.

That is why, as a journal, we endorsed the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) in 2026. The principles of DORA align with institutional objectives of fairness in evaluation, strengthening open science, recognizing disciplinary and linguistic diversity, and social impact of research, among others, enabling a fairer and more context-sensitive assessment of academic production and expanding publication options for researchers.

The journal ECA: Estudios Centroamericanos is taking steps to implement the principles of DORA:

  • Eliminating the promotion of impact factor or journal-based metrics (5-year impact factor, EigenFactor, SCImago, h-index)
  • Implementing article-level metrics to promote assessment based on the content of the publication

The journal ECA: Estudios Centroamericanos also commits to gradually developing the following measures aimed at implementing DORA principles:

  • Encouraging responsible authorship and providing information on the specific contributions of each author
  • Facilitating the reuse of reference lists from research articles by making them available under a public domain license
  • Reducing restrictions on the number of references
  • Promoting the citation of primary literature when relevant to properly acknowledge original contributions

Dr. Carlos Ferrufino is responsible for evaluating research and implementing the DORA principles at ECA: Estudios Centroamericanos.
